Mafadi Peak Trek - 4 days
Join GoVertical Mountaineering guides for a challenging hike from Injasuthi hutted camp up to the highest point in South Africa – Mafadi 3452m above sea level. Fit hikers will enjoy the challenge of a 2000m altitude gain from base to the summit. The views of course are spectacular.
HIKE MAFADI SUMMIT, THE HIGHEST IN SOUTH AFRICA
The Injasuthi river gurgles over sandstone boulders as you leave the picturesque Injasuthi hutted camp and it’s beautiful fever trees. The trek meanders through montane forest but as the altitude increases it quickly gives way to rolling grasslands and dramatic sandstone rock bands.
The bulk of the ascent is via Judges Pass over 1 700m of demanding Drakensberg Pass hiked in the first 2 days. We camp half way up the pass at Centenary hut, with colossal escarpment mountains looming over us. The iconic features of Cathkin Peak, Monks cowl, Champagne Castle and the Injasuthi Triplets become more distinct.
The third day is our trek up to the Summit of Mafadi, clouds swirling below us the vista is spectacular. The final days descent is via Leslies Pass where weather permitting we could stop for a swim in the mountain stream.
