NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG GUIDED DAY HIKES

DRAKENSBERG AMPHITHEATRE HIKE

The famous Amphitheatre in the uKhahlamba World Heritage site, towers above Kwa Zulu Natal. The escarpment is roughly 3000m above sea level.

The trail also known as the “Sentinel Hike Drakensberg” or “Chain Ladders hike” contours past the mighty Sentinel Peak  which is the highest free standing peak in the region. We use these iron chain ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sources Plateau, source of many of South Africa’s rivers including the Tugela which flows out in the Indian Ocean near Durban.

From the edge of the Drakensberg, there are spectacular views of the Amphitheatre starting from the Sentinel, curving round to Devils Tooth and Eastern Buttress including the Tugela falls which disappears into the vast valleys below.

GUIDED TRAIL IN ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

At the base of the colossal Amphitheatre in the Royal National Park is magical area of natural forest, rolling hills, San Rock Art, gurgling streams and river carved gorges. With many routes to choose from we can change the  trail to suit you, Surprise Ridge is one of our favourites though.

The spectacular view from Surprise Ridge is just one of the breathtaking rewards on this full day trail. Along this scenic route that you’ll encounter The Grotto, a cavern carved in the sandstone rock with a beautiful waterfall cascading through it, Fairy Glen, a delightful area of tranquil forest and streams, Sunday Falls which cascades over the sandstone ridges and the ever present Amphitheatre towering above you. This is a delightful hike in an emchanted part of the Drakensberg.

GUIDED HIKE IN TUGELA GORGE, DRAKENSBERG

From the Royal Natal National Park we explore the Tugela Gorge with its massive overhangs & beautiful rock pools. This trail exposes tremendous views when you gaze up at the Sentinel, Amphitheatre and Devils tooth as the path winds along the river course.

The Tugela gorge Trail takes us along the banks of the Tugela, once we are near the top of the gorge, near the base of the Tugela Falls, we will stop for a traditional hikers packed lunch. There’s time to relax next to the clean clear waters of the Thukela River or even take a swim if the weathers good.

After a stretch of boulder hopping and exploration in the gorge, we rejoin the path winding back along the Tugela river and return to the start.
